ARTIST STATEMENT

Film Photography

I am a 20 year old Visual and Public Arts student who studies at CSU Monterey Bay. As a young emerging artist, I find myself drawn to all mediums, but I always come back to painting and photography. Every step in the photography process is intentional - such as the staging of each photo and the developing of the prints. Although the process of analogue photography is tedious and structured, I still find it is one of the most expressive and enjoyable visual forms of art. Going through the struggle of each time consuming step makes the outcome a million times more rewarding for me. I've realized that it has made me think twice every time I press the shutter. I use photography as self-expression; my photographs show how I interpret personal experiences, relationships and the world from my perspective. My choice of subject is influenced by my interests in emotion, experiences and relationships. Moving forward, I am going to incorporate more of my identity and culture because I want my body of work to show the viewer a glimpse of  the world from my position. I use my art as a visual language between myself and the viewer that is always up for interpretation and criticism. Analogue photography is an extremely difficult medium to work with, but it is also one of the most beautiful and visual appealing.
